The Institute for Protein Design in the Department of Biochemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 1.

The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes. The Research Scientist 1 (RS1) will support Institute for Protein Design (IPD) Translational Scientists. The research activities will involve the execution of standard protein expression, purification and biophysical characterization methods and data, with eventual independent operation thereof. The RS1 will assist in the optimization of methods listed above for novel designed proteins.

The research activities will involve the expression and purification of proteins designed by IPD Translational Investigators, and characterization of protein stability and bioactivity. The RS1 will grow to be an expert in production, optimization and formulation of designed proteins for clinical applications. The RS1 will, in support of the Translational Investigators, manage the laboratory, process orders, interface with EH&S and help maintain safety standards, cleanliness and organization.

Percentage Of Effort

Protein production and characterization – 60%

General lab maintenance – 20%

Yeast surface display – 10%

Molecular biology techniques – 10%

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Cell Biology or related Life Sciences + at least 3 months of work experience in a related field.

Experience in protein expression in microbial systems, protein purification using chromatography, general aseptic technique and mammalian cell culture.

Desired Requirements

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

Experience in biophysical and biochemical characterization techniques, including SDS PAGE, ELISA, biolayer interferometry, LC/MS, HPLC, in vitro cell signaling assays, and other custom techniques.
